Whitewall: Christie’s Hosts NFT Block Party in Dubai

"Block Party" aims to reconstruct the idea of digital art and the artists who make it, shining a specific light on more traditional artists who have joined in on the mainstream adoption of NFTs in the past two years. José Delbo, for instance, first got involved in the digital art world at 86 years old. After a successful career as a comic book illustrator—creating for titles like Wonder Woman, Buck Rogers, and The Mod Squad—he released his first NFT comic on the blockchain in 2020, since becoming known as Joséhas.

Financial Times: How London became a crypto-art capital

Its money, talent and tech have enabled blockchain think-tanks and galleries selling NFTs to flourish. One of the more creative disruptions accelerated by the pandemic has been the explosion of interest in crypto art, or art turned into tokens on the blockchain, both as an asset class and as a global cultural trend.

Osinachi, the first African NFT artist to be featured at Christie's, is adding a new social token NFT experience to his show in London.

Africa’s best-known digital artist Osinachi—who uses Microsoft Word as his canvas— first got his hands on a computer when he was 16 years old. He was born in 1991 in Ada, Nigeria, a modest city of 2.5 million at a time when most people there couldn't afford a home computer. Instead, his father, an importer, would frequent a local cybercafe, where he rented time on a PC.

She Curates Interview

HOW WOULD YOU REFRAME THE CONVERSATION AROUND ART TO GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED?

I think there’s this tendency to think of art as something out of reach, or as only accessible to those with money. In the past, art was something only the upper class and aristocrats had access to, but now it’s available to everyone. Social media has democratized the art world by creating new entry points of accessibility and communication. You don’t have to be in New York or London to participate, but you can look to Instagram or even your local art scene to be a part of it.

COVID-19 - WHAT EFFECT WILL IT HAVE ON THE ART MARKET?

Daria - "As the world economy is collapsing, opportunities will rise in the art market. Good collectors tend to hold onto important work, but eventually as people will start to lose more money, they will have to sell! Especially those who previously invested in the stock market. For any one who is looking to invest now, I would suggest to focus on buying historically important artists and not the trendy artists." .
